John Hamilton Glass worked in Edinburgh Scotland in his youth and it was there that he concentrated on studies of horses, some of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1847 to 1859, and among which an oil painting Relaxing on the Moors won him the nomination of Associate of the Royal Academy. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1847.
