————————————
Joseph Farquharson studied at the Board of Manufacture school in Edinburgh with Peter Graham. He became famous for his sheep in snow paintings during the 1880s which earned him the nickname ‘Frozen Mutton’. Wishing to rapidly escape this label I think is when he created this lovely hight of summer painting. This makes this painting very relevant to the overall Joseph Farquharson story and his thinking at the time, and clear inspiration for this particular fine painting. From the depths of winter to the hight of summer, (polar opposite), maybe in response to the jesters! certainly adding some balance to his prolific portfolio of frozen mutton! winter scenes.
A painting that reflects this (polar opposite) breakaway, from sheep and snow and shows his diverse, natural artistic talent has no bounds. To further that cause, he left for the continent and attended the studio of Carolus-Duran in Paris from 1880 to 1884 and began painting compositions with figures. During the winter of 1885-1886, he made a trip to Egypt and painted scenes of life in Cairo. His work has been compared with that of Frederick Goodall and the French artist Gérome.
Farquharson exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1859, also Royal Academy in London from 1886 to 1893, and at the Royal Institution in 1896. In 1900 he was elected as an associate of the Royal Academy, and as a member in 1915.
