SOLD: Exceptionally Rare First Period Islamic Bronze Seal Abd ALLAH
This is one of the earliest Islamic seals that we have had the privilege of handling in thirty years of dealing antiques.
It is at least 1,000 years old and has all the hallmarks of being from the earliest Islamic period after the Hijrah (1,400 years ago).
The inscription is in very basic, rudimentary Arabic.
The size and shape are typical of the earliest type of Islamic seal:
It is of a funnel or conical shape and stands just 3cm high with a diameter of 2cm across the face of the seal.
The way that ‘Abd’ is written under ‘Allah’ is a protocol that was followed in the earliest time of Islamic writing. That is why in Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) seal the formula was inscribed to be read from the bottom up as:
“Allah
Rasool
Muhammad”
Abd Allah translates as “Servant of Allah” and although it may have been a common name, not many people owned seals in those ancient, early days of Islam. Therefore, this seal must have been made for someone of significance and importance in the early Muslim community.
The other point to note is that Rasool Allah (pbuh) had a seal that was circular when stamped. This seal is also designed to fit into the circular shape.
This is a very rare and highly desirable, early piece of Islamic history and one of the oldest seals that you will ever see available for sale.
Please note that there is a minor, ancient loss at the top where there would have been a pierced hole for hanging. This is a very minor loss, part of the history of this piece and does not detract from the overall wonderful condition and rarity of such an important, early work of Islamic Art.
