Description

A Roman pale blue glass unguentarium with an out-turned rim, long neck and a bulbous body. The bottle has a flattened base.
Roman eastern empire: Circa 2nd-3rd Century AD.
Condition: Complete and intact, with silvery iridescence over part of the body.
Height 10.7 cms (4.2 ins).
The long narrow neck would only have allowed small quantities at a time of the expensive contents, one of the essential oils or perfumes which would have been gathered from all corners of the expansive Roman Empire.

Context: Glass was produced in large numbers in the later Roman empire. It was used to produce items of everyday use, for keeping expensive unguents and cosmetic oils which would have been gathered from all corners of the expansive Roman Empire.
