A high quality Apulian Gnathian ware epichysis with shiny black gloss over the whole surface. The vessel is decorated with elaborate geometric and floral decoration rendered in maroon, white and yellow pigments. A moulded lion-head terminal has been placed at the point of separation between the handle and the pouring spout, to further enrich the composition.

An epichysis is a kind of jug with a squat body, a high slender neck ending in a pinched beak-spout tilted sharply upward, and a high raised handle that slightly protrudes from the spout. Epichyses were used to serve wine or to fill oil lamps through their accurate spout.
