Antique Chinese Plique-a-Jour Plate

Antique Chinese Plique-a-Jour Plate

Description

A rare Plique-a-Jour glass plate of Chinese origin. The word Plique-a-jour means ”letting in the light” in French. It is so much like the enamelled Cloisonne work but without the solid background. This is an extremely difficult technique of creating a stained glass look to a decorative object.

Not certain of its age but it’s likely that it was made during the Meiji period, around 1900-1920.

The plate is in perfect condition with all of the glass cells intact within the wire work. A good size for work of this nature, it measures 232mm across (just over 9”).
