Mizpah literally means watch tower in Hebrew but the giving of Mizpah rings and tokens was a symbolic gesture of an emotional tie between two people.
This is a very rare mid-Victorian 18ct yellow gold antique mourning ring later set with a banded agate stone in a shield. The ring is hallmarked for 1874 and assayed in Birmingham, England. An inscription on the inside of the ring reads “E. Holm … [died] … April 10th 1878 age 56”
This is a really beautiful and unique, rare find!
“And [it was called] Mizpah (Watchtower); for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” (Genesis, 31:49)
