A very rare hand carved lava stick pin dating from around 1900. The head is a carving of a bearded man wearing a hat at an angle in superb detail. The subject may well be of a historical figure,
Lava is the molten rock that comes from volcanoes and was a popular medium for carving small, detailed items of jewellery.
The head is securely attached to a robust pin and can be worn in the lapel of a jacket or on a hat. They were originally worn by more affluent English gentlemen to keep their cravats in place.
It is in a fairly good condition with 3 miniscule chips to the brim of the hat.
A great stick pin collector’s item.
