Large Irish 1840 sterling silver rat tail soup ladle Dublin with Belfast retailer mark
This is a wonderful, large and elegant sterling silver soup ladle measuring 34cm in length and weighing a hefty 258g.
It is very well made and solid piece with the additional flourish of a ‘rat tail’.
The maker’s mark is for Christopher Cummins Junior who was active between 1831 and 1866 based at 42 Great Ship Street, Dublin. The additional hallmark is for a very high end retailer based in Belfast, Robert Neill.
The date mark is the upper case letter “U” with serif and in a shield, with ’rounded’ corners at the top and pointed at the bottom.
There is Gothic letter ‘M’ for the original owner and it must have been a very wealthy family to have owned this large ladle in 1840.
We have come across a similar large rat tail soup ladle being offered at £750 but is English and slightly later in date (full details available on request).
Please note that is amazing piece is in very good, clean and unrepaired condition.
It is a used piece and it is 180 years old so there is some commensurate minor wear and tear but this does not detract from the overall pleasing appearance.
