Antique English Victorian Blue and White Transfer Plate ~ “Tombs near Etaya” ~ Cork Edge & Malkin

Of Indian interest ~ A good Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Blue and White Transfer Pottery Plate, printed in a light blue palette with a named view of “Tombs near Etaya on the Jumna River”, originally produced by Thomas & Benjamin Godwin  { fl. 1809 – 1834 } of New Basin Pottery and New Wharf Pottery, Burslem, Staffordshire. This is one of a number of recorded views from their series “Indian Scenery”, the source print for which first appeared in Charles Ramus Forrest’s “A Picturesque Tour Along the Rivers Ganges and Jumna in India”, published in 1824. The reverse with underglaze blue printed Title, “TOMBS NEAR ETAYA ON THE JUMNA RIVER” and the Maker’s Mark, C E & M within a floral cartouche, together with the numeral 8, indicating that this plate was produced by Cork, Edge and Malkin of Newport Pottery, Burslem, { 1860 – 1871 }.
