A most attractive Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Semi – Porcelain Botanical Part Dessert Service of superb quality by George Grainger & Co. of Worcester, { 1839 – 1902 }. Comprising, one tall and two low tazzas together with six dessert plates, each piece painted with a different botanical subject, the whole series reserved within a band of “bleu celeste” and jewelled beaded border. On the face of it, one would regard this service as porcelain, and in cataloguing the set, we have taken our lead from Geoffrey Godden’s “British Pottery and Porcelain Marks”, where the author writes of Mark No. 1762, “Impressed or printed Initial Marks on the special “semi – porcelain” body, introduced in 1848…”, since, although barely legible, each of the plates offered here bears such impressed marks, together with the pattern number 2423 painted in red. The majority of the pieces also bear the printed Retailer’s Mark of James Green & Nephew of Queen Victoria St., London.
