A charming late medieval stirrup ring, bronze, probably silver gilt when made. The original gem probably a sapphire being lost in antiquity, and now replaced by a modern synthetic gem in sapphire blue.
Stirrup rings originated asĀ Bishops “Rings of Office” around the 6th or 7th century., with the name deriving from the obvious similarity to a horse stirrup. Used in both sacred and decorative contexts from the 12th century until the 19th century.
