RARE West Indies Caribbean & Canada photographs c1900
“Hight Street Soo. Ontario Canada”
Soo was the abbreviated name for Sault Ste Marie, one of the oldest cities in the US.
This wonderful photograph captures the high street with great detail.
You can see the name of one shop on the right: “Man’s Store”, just before it is a sign on a pole which you can read “Ice Cream”.
In the distance I have managed to read “Sam Lee Laundry” and “Telegrams”.
Down the left: first shop has the word “supplies” in the window.
The next one has “[La]fayet’s” in the glass above the door.
“J C Miller”
“Architect”
“New England Restaurant”
“King’s Pool Room”
There is a ‘ghostly’ figure of a man in the foreground, bottom left and in the distance on the left are a group of people. If you follow the tracks down the centre of the road, there is a tram in the distance.
Please note that this listing is only for the image shown above.
The image was produced with the light colour as shown – all original and untouched for over 100 years! Amazing piece capturing history long lost in the mists of time!
This genuine, early photograph measures: 14cm x 9cm
We are splitting up a small collection of rare and early photographs taken on a journey starting in the West Indies / Caribbean and ending in Canada sometime around 1900.
These rare and early photographs are original and very unusual as this type of image of this area just does not come up for sale. Images of streets and scenes of daily life as it was over 100 years ago are highly sought after.
These genuine original photographs are mounted on thin black card as shown.
Whoever took these photographs would have been someone of substance / wealth as they travelled extensively, had the time to take these images and stayed in some ‘fancy’ places (look at the posh wrought iron gates of the residence that an image is taken of Steamer in St Lucia as an example). Also, the copperplate or cursive handwriting under each photograph demonstrates education and learning.
There are some intriguing clues about the early date of the album such as images showing the construction of the Panama Canal which was completed in 1914, an image of a very early car and the clothing worn by people in the photographs.
We have also identified the steam ship with the name “John Haggart” that provided excursions and is shown in one of the photographs. It was operating from 1891 onwards.
The photographs certainly cover the period c1900-1910 making them over 100 years old which is very rare for this part of the world when it comes to early photography.
Each photograph measures around 11cm x 8cm unless stated otherwise.
Overall in very good, clean condition with varying condition of card as shown.
Please note that this listing is only for the image shown above.
